In 2011, Claire asked if she could have her hair dyed the colors of the rainbow when her team The Rainbow Smile Makers raised $10,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association's annual Walk. Well needless to say her lofty goal and enthusiasm could not be denied. With the help of friends, family and community she exceeded her goal and yes had her hair dyed all the colors of the Rainbow. Claire chose the name The Rainbow Smile Makers because of her fondness of Rainbows and Smiley Faces. I later stumbled across the Urban Dictionary's definition of a Rainbow Smile which is “to smile out of happiness while crying of sadness”.
The irony of her team name and the devastating effects of neuromuscular disease is all too poignant. Claire has endured so much since being diagnosed in 2004 at the age of 9. She breathes with the assistance of a ventilator, Her spinal muscles became too weak and her spine is fused with metal rods. Yet , Claire faces each day with joy and a fighting spirit that gives a greater concern for others than of herself. She bares the smile while those around her bare the sadness. She forms a team each year to give other children the opportunity to attend MDA camp “the best week of the whole year”. She raises money each year to strive for a cure and continue to provide resources to families like ours. She motivates everyone each year to contribute because she wants to make a difference.
