Dear family and friends,
I've always wanted to run a marathon, so I am excited to pair this personal goal with an effort that extends beyond myself: raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
One day at work, the Marine fellow in my office told me he was running the Marine Corps Marathon as an opportunity to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Nick’s two young sons have Becker’s Muscular Dystrophy.
Nick asked if I wanted to join his team, "Team Rock Starr," and raise money for MDA and run the race. I immediately said, I’m in.
“The history of our fundraiser is centered on our family’s diagnosis with Becker’s Muscular Dystrophy. Our oldest son Jack was diagnosed as being on the Autism spectrum in the summer of 2016 while we were stationed in Okinawa, Japan, which forced us to move back to the United States. Based off of his diagnosis we began a few basic tests, one of which revealed a deletion in his X chromosome consistent with Muscular Dystrophy. Since it is a genetic disease, my wife Heidi and I were tested, and when it was discovered she also had the deletion, we tested our then 5 month-old son Maxton. He had the same deletion as well. Finding the Muscular Dystrophy Association and learning everything they provide for families has been a humbling and exciting experience knowing we can help contribute.”
Muscular dystrophy is a group of genetic diseases that cause progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass. Becker’s muscular dystrophy is an X-linked recessive inherited disorder characterized by slowly progressing muscle weakness of the legs and pelvis. There is currently no cure.
My goal is to raise $1,250 for MDA by October 13. Please consider making a donation to help me reach this goal and support this cause.
Your donation will help MDA fund research to accelerate treatments and cures and provide care and support for individuals with muscular dystrophy and their families who love and care for them. Thanks in part to MDA Team Momentum participants and donors, MDA anticipates more new treatments in development during the next five years than in the previous five decades combined. Let’s keep and build this momentum.
The Marine Corps Marathon is a prestigious race that serves as an anchor for many runners to raise awareness and funds for various causes. The race will take place in Washington, DC on October 27. The course starts outside Arlington National Cemetery, continues alongside the Potomac River, through the National Mall to the Capital, up to Woodley Park, and ends back at the cemetery.
And if you live in D.C., consider supporting Team Rock Starr by cheering us on during the race!
