As a member of MDA Team Momentum, I’m dedicating every step of the Disney Star Wars Rival Run in April to helping kids and adults living with muscular dystrophy, ALS, and related muscle-debilitating diseases live longer and grow stronger.
In 1991 my nephew Shaun was born with Myotonic Dystrophy, a form of Muscular Dystrophy. As we learned about this disease, our family was surprised to discover that this was a hereditary illness. Through genetic testing, my siblings and I learned that of the five of us, only my eldest sister and I (the youngest) were not carriers. Our three siblings were, unfortunately.
Even though at the time my siblings had little to no visible characteristics of Myotonic Dystrophy, over the years this degenerative muscle disease has chipped away at their strength, balance, and overall muscle control. Things we may take for granted have become a daily challenge for them.
While I watch my two sisters struggle with this debilitating disease in ways I cannot imagine (my brother has since passed), I am often struck with helplessness. So when the opportunity came about to fundraise in this way, I just had to dive in.
PLEDGE TO HELP
Every donation I receive for the Disney Star Wars Rival Run will help MDA fund groundbreaking research to accelerate treatments and cures, and provide care and support for families.
Your donation, no matter the size, will help improve the lives of individuals with muscular dystrophy and the families who love them—like my own.
