Hi! Thanks for getting to this page!
My name is Haley Armstrong (probably obvious by now)- I have been involved with the MDA as a camp counselor since 2011, and at first I had NO idea why I registered myself for another marathon.
But I do know why. When I first started as a camp counselor, I was really only wanting to go to a camp for the summer and settled on "MDA camp" because I couldn't be gone from my other job for an entire camp season. I had no clue what I was getting myself into, and I certainly had zero inklings that it would literally change my life as I knew it. Long story short (although if you ask me more about it, I would LOVE to tell you), MDA camp is a place that I look forward to every year, and I know the kids look forward to every day of every year. At camp we, counselors and the campers, all participate in activities we might have never thought we would- archery, horse back-riding, zip lining, canoeing, singing in a talent show, playing hockey, and talking about our futures. We also care deeply about others around us and make sure basic needs are met so that camp can be a liberating and joyful experience.
MDA camp is a place where every kid can feel like they belong. They feel a little bit better understood by their peers. They feel an overall sense of freedom that they might not feel outside of camp. At camp, they are just kids at camp, and we are just the luckiest people to be at camp, too.
It costs about over $800.00 for one child to attend camp. With your donations, all kids get to go to camp at NO cost to the family, which is really great.
I know that I'm strictly talking about camp, and the MDA does a bazillion amazing things for families and individuals impacted my muscle diseases. Throughout my training journey I will be sure to highlight these as well. But- camp is the reason I personally am throwing myself into the miles again, and the reason I will obnoxiously keep asking for donations. Your donation will not only contribute to the camp and the lifelong lessons and memories from camp, but will also extend care and services to those kids and families on a regular basis. MDA camp is just one week long, but this allows me to continue to be a part of the MDA family and our impact year-round.
I will not be attending camp this year (or at least the one that I normally do) due to I am getting married (YAY), so I also hope that by raising money and putting in some miles to get your attention that I can still make an impact to my MDA family.
Thanks for listening to the blabber. Thank you for your donations- I've seen the product of your donation in real life and it is something better than Christmas IMHO.
As a member of MDA Team Momentum, I’m dedicating my miles, muscles and personal finish line to helping kids and adults living with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related muscle-debilitating diseases live longer and grow stronger.
Thank you in advance for your support
